The night’s slew of bands, whose genre-boundaries stretch across the post-rock indie/emo/hardcore gamut, drove in from Las Vegas (Ritornello) and San Diego (Pocket) to join fellow LA-based Fat Lady Sang in supporting Punxsutawney.
Aside from shared taste and mutual friends, the show’s undeniable through-line was felt in a collective release of excitement around a new band on the cusp of break out.
Common exchanges heard that evening centered around how long so-and-so has known x member, and who has more years over the other in viewership tandem to their artistic journey. Maybe as a friend and huge fan of the group, I am biased, but as the members of Punxsutawney continue to be referred to as “guitar-rock swiss-army knives” or “men of a thousand bands”, their veteran status of the California underground feels more than deserved, it feels natural.
One of the great pleasures of working with a band like Punxsutawney is witnessing the talent they were able to gymnastically coordinate onto a bill. While I have caught a few Fat Lady Sang shows, Ritornello and Pocket were new to me. It was a huge treat to meet them, and hear their music. The whole night felt like a grand gesture of appreciation, in both directions, between the audience and the musicians.
The chemistry between bands was evident, from pre-show dances to Passion Pit and Group Love, to post-show Tony’s Saloon and tacos. Firing back and forth with the group left me beaming.
Punxsutawney’s debut record, “Untitled”, released by @self_versed_records, is out on the usual streaming platforms. If you’re lucky, you can grab one of their remaining cassettes as they’re still on their US tour with @vs_self. I got one that night— while Sam and Albert may have shyly played down their signatures on my copy, I feel lucky to even have the tape, and above all, to be able to produce this night in the first place.
Thank you to @ryan_gomez123 for the pictures. His turnaround time is crazy.
